Living Space lacquerware has been designed to be used and enjoyed as well as look beautiful. By following a few simple guidelines, you can keep your pieces looking as shimmering and glossy as the day you brought them home.

  • Don’t let lacquerware come in contact with sharp utensils.
When serving food, use chopsticks or cutlery made from
    wood or horn.

  • Never put lacquerware in the microwave or dishwasher.
When necessary, wash it by hand in warm water using a
very mild detergent and rubbing gently with a soft cloth or
sponge. Avoid abrasive cleansers or scrubbers.

  • Lacquer can withstand warm, but not boiling hot liquids (which could burst the carefully spun bamboo). Any lacquer ware items that have come into contact with acidic liquids (like the vinegar in salad dressings or sushi) should be rinsed with warm water as soon as possible. Or you could follow the Japanese tradition and line your sushi tray with a fresh leaf before putting food on it. This creates an aesthetic presentation and also stops the vinegar from seeping onto the tray!

  • To remove hairline scratches and finger marks, use a good quality car wax (such as Johnson & Johnson). Apply with cotton wool and then buff gently with a soft cloth made of cotton or silk.

  • Most importantly, please use your lacquerware! After all, lacquer products have been an integral part of daily life in Asia for thousands of years and continue to function in homes and restaurants throughout the region.
